Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) is an autonomous Institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India to conduct research in the fields of plasma physics and associated technologies, with special mandates to perform various developments in the area of controlled thermonuclear fusion as a future source of energy and to develop industrially beneficial technologies using plasmas. IPR is also actively involved in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, an experimental fusion reactor being constructed at Cadarache, France, under an international partnership agreement. ITER-India is a specially empowered project within IPR, to deliver the commitments towards ITER. Facilitation Center for Industrial Plasma Technologies (FCIPT), a division of IPR, is actively involved in the development and popularization of plasma technologies relevant to Indian industries.
Applications are invited from highly motivated students to pursue doctoral research in the broad areas of theoretical and experimental plasma physics.
Eligibility: M.Sc. in one of the following subjects : Physics, Engineering Physics or Applied Physics with a minimum aggregate of 55%. Candidates expecting a Master's degree in any one of the above subjects by August 31st 2011 can also apply.
Age Limit: Not more than 26 years as on 1st Sept. 2011 (born on or after 01/9/1985).
Selection Procedure:Written test will be held for the short listed candidates followed by a personal interview for those who qualify in the written test. Names of the short listed candidates and the details about the written test/interview will be put on this website time to time . The tentative dates are between 20th to 23rd June.
Written test may be waived off for candidates who satisfy eligibility criterion and have qualified in any one of the following:
- JEST 2011
- GATE (in Physics / Engineering Physics / Applied Physics, 2010 / 2011) and
- CSIR UGC NET in June or Dec. 2010 in subject code 5 ( Subject code name PHY ).
Likely Interview dates for written test waived candidates are during 31st May to 3rd June.
Stipend & Facilities: Rs.16,000/- per month, raised to Rs.18,000/- per month after two years, subject to satisfactory academic review; a book grant of Rs.10,000/- per year; and accommodation and medical facility at a nominal charge. Students may also be supported partially for attending conferences abroad, once during their tenure. All students selected for Phd programme will be registered under Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai.
