Indian Institute of Science Education and Research – Thiruvananthapuram (IISER-TVM)Ph.D. programme


Applications are invited from highly motivated students for admission to the Ph.D. programme beginning in August 2011 at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research – Thiruvananthapuram (IISER-TVM).

Eligibility criteria

Biological Sciences

Candidates must satisfy any one of the following criterions to apply for the Ph.D. programme in the School of Biology at IISER-TVM starting from 1st August 2011.
Masters degree in Biological/Chemical/Physical/Mathematical/ Allied Medical Sciences or a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Medicine. 60% marks or equivalent is desirable.
Qualifying in one of the following national level tests with validity as on 1st of August 2011: CSIR-UGC-JRF/DBT-JRF/GATE/ICMR JRF.

The second requirement (qualifying in a national test) is waived for applicants interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution.

Selection procedure:
All shortlisted candidates are required to appear for a written aptitude test. For candidates whose research interests are in the area of Ecology and Evolution, a written aptitude test in this subject area is mandatory. Candidates interested in any other area of Biological Sciences, must take a written aptitude test consisting of reasoning problems in Science and Mathematics.
Candidates can appear for ONLY ONE of these written aptitude tests.
Only candidates who qualify the written aptitude test will appear for an interview.

Research Areas:

Biochemistry, Ecology and Evolution, Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cell Biology, Genetics and Genomics, Microbiology, Plant Biology, Structural Biology


Chemical Sciences

Masters degree in Chemistry with 60% marks or equivalent is desirable. Candidates should qualify CSIR-UGC-JRF/GATE with validity as on 1st of August 2011.

Mere fulfilling the eligibility criterion does not entitle a candidate to be called for the interview.

Physical Sciences

Masters degree in Physical Sciences, Engineering or Technology in areas closely related to the interests of the physics faculty at IISER TVM. 60% marks or equivalent is desirable. Qualifying in one of the following national level tests with validity as on 1st of August 2011: GATE/CSIR-UGC-JRF. Applicants with M. Tech need a GATE score valid as of 1st August 2010.

Mere fulfilling the eligibility criterion does not entitle a candidate to be called for the interview.


Mathematical Sciences

Candidates must satisfy any one of the following criterion to apply for the Ph.D. programme in the School of Mathematics at IISER-TVM starting from 1st August 2011.
Master’s degree in Mathematics / Statistics / in a relevant area of science with desired CPI of 6.5 (or 60% of marks) and a valid CSIR-UGC-JRF/NBHM/GATE as on 1st August 2011.
Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology in a relevant area with desired CPI of 6.5 (or 60% of marks) with valid GATE score as on 1st August 2010.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in a relevant area with a desired CPI of 7.0 (or 65% of marks), an appearance in the Indian National Math Olympiad (INMO) in class XI or XII, and a valid CSIR-UGC-JRF/NBHM/GATE as on 1st August 2011.

Selection procedure:

Shortlisted candidates will be called for both the written test and interview. The final selection will be solely based on the performance in the written test and interview.
