Feel of CAT 2010

30 OCTOBER 2010 (SLOT 1)

A first hand account from students who faced the CAT.

Highlights

The number of questions was, as Prometric had already announced, 60 questions in all
Number of sections too remained the same, VA, QA and LR/DI.
Number of questions in each section was 20.
Paper Pattern too was similar to the CAT 2009 papers.
Negative marking was not indicated.

This session of CAT 10 was overall of an above average difficulty level

Sectional analysis for VA

Today also VA was a comparatively straightforward.
There were 3 RCs with 3, 3 and 2 questions slightly difficult and few of them were based on the philosophical concepts.
2-3 Parajumbles, 2 para completion and 2 usage based questions were also the part of this section.
Text highlighting facility was available for the passages.

Sectional analysis for QA

QA section was of above average difficulty level.
Today again a mix of all area with slightly higher preference to algebra and arithmetic. And Geometry on the easier side.

Sectional analysis for LR/DI

Today LR/DI section was difficult to tackle in the given time limit.
There were few single questions asked in this section.
It was not like traditional DI. Now the trend is towards the small caselets where hardly 2-3 questions based on lengthy caselets.
Few sitters and direct questions was the positive part of this section.

Verbal Ability: 14+ questions
Quantitative Ability:12+ questions
Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation: 11+ questions.

Overall an above average paper with overall attempts going up to about 37+

This session of CAT 10 was of average difficulty level and comfortable to tackle.

Sectional analysis for VA

This section was of average difficulty level.
The RCs passages were of average length. There were 3 RC passages with 4, 3 and 2 questions respectively. Most of them were indirect questions.
Text highlighting facility was available for the passages.
Staple CAT questions types like Para Jumbles (4-5 questions) and Para Completion were also present.
Also vocabulary and grammar questions appeared.

Sectional analysis for QA

The difficulty level of this section was average.
Number of questions from Arithmetics were more. Questions from Logarithm, Speed-time-distance, Interest, Simultenious Equations, Trapezium were also seem.

Sectional analysis for LR/DI

Difficulty level of this section was average.
There were 4-5 caselets on Analytical Reasoning containing 1 question each.
DI consists of mainly pie charts and bar graph, thought calculation intensive, but easily manageable.

VA section has kept consistency in the difficulty level, means easiest to attempt out 3 sections
Again RCs were slightly tricky but manageable.

QA section was of above average difficulty level.
Mix of all areas with a combination of sitters and time consuming tricky questions.

Sectional analysis for LR/DI

Today LR/DI section was comparatively easier than the earlier slots.
Though caselets are time consuming, there are solvable and no new concepts.

Quantitative Ability:13+ questions
Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation: 12+ questions.

Overall an average paper with overall attempts going up to about 40+

Today VA section of this paper seems to be difficult than the earlier slots.
No para-completions questions were asked in this section.

QA section was of above average difficulty level.
Almost all the questions were of unique concepts with fresh look to each question.
Though not much comfortable in look, definitely solvable with cool minds.

Sectional analysis for LR/DI

Again slightly comfortable compare to other two sections.
Caselets were time consuming, but with familiar look.

Para-jumbled questions were there along with vocabulary questions.

QA section was of average difficulty level.
Except 4-5 questions, remaining questions were manageable with the knowledge of basics in all areas.

Sectional analysis for LR/DI

This section has maintained the consistency in difficulty level i.e average level.
Calculation based caselets with not more than 2-3 questions is the feature of this section.

Today RCs are bit tough with passages based on philosophy and Democracy.
Para-completions questions and Para-jumbled questions were there along with plenty of vocabulary questions.

QA section was of average difficulty level.
Combination of 5-6 sitters with some ambiguous and tricky questions.
Few topics like P&C and Probability were totally absent.

Sectional analysis for LR/DI

Today the difficulty level of this section has been reduced.
Though many caselets with hardly 2-3 questions based on them, there are many sitters in the section.

Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation: 15+ questions.

Overall an above average paper with overall attempts going up to about 43+
